The two-story, 46,000 square foot facility doesn't skimp either when it comes to doing what it does best - surgery. Four state-of-the-art operating rooms feature the latest technology in surgery, anesthesiology and patient safety, along with an onsite laboratory, digital X-ray and open MRI to make diagnosing problems faster and easier. The surgical hospital also received the Joint Commission's Gold Seal of Approval(TM), the highest level of hospital accreditation possible. The Joint Commission is the industry leader responsible for setting national standards for health care quality and safety.

The $34 million surgical hospital is a joint venture between Sutter North Medical Foundation, a coalition of local Yuba City surgeons and National Surgical Hospitals, Inc. the nation's leading developer of specialty surgical hospitals. Open since April 2009, Sutter Surgical Hospital-North Valley focuses solely on outpatient and inpatient surgical services and anticipates treating 220 patients a month by the end of 2009.

While Sutter Surgical Hospital-North Valley offers some of the nicest hospital rooms around, complete with pull-out sleepers to accommodate a patient's family member or guest, most patients are in and out the same day.

"New technologies and less invasive techniques, such as laparoscopy, have virtually changed the face of surgery over the past few decades," said orthopedic surgeon Richard Tortosa, M.D., a Sutter Surgical Hospital-North Valley partner and board member. "Many procedures that used to require long hospital stays and recovery periods can now be done on an outpatient basis much faster, easier and more safely than ever before. Patients experience less pain and return to their normal activities much more quickly, often within a matter of days."

The surgical hospital's board certified surgeons perform a wide variety of advanced surgical procedures and techniques on infants, children and adults (see box). Patients requiring inpatient stay, however, must be age 14 or older.
