Celebrating Our History
On Saturday, January 12, 452
people came together in one location to "Celebrate Our History" for the
Yuba-Sutter Chamber of Commerce Annual Dinner and Awards Presentation. It was
also a celebration of some very special businesses and people who make the
Yuba-Sutter Area such a great place to live and do business.
The Yuba-Sutter Chamber is
made up of businesses large and small and as the Membership Director, I would
like to congratulate our Business of the Year, Hilbers, Inc. and our Small
Business of the Year, Butler Cleaners & Laundry. They are prime examples of
local people who not only do great business but are also great citizens!
Congratulations also go to two great volunteers, our Volunteer of the Year winner,
Theresa Gallier of Yuba County Health and Human Services and our Ambassador of
the Year, Jill Dettmer of Sutter County Republican Women. People and
organizations that have made significant contributions to our community this
year are: Help Ellis Lake Prosper (H.E.L.P.) with the Marysville Exchange Club
winner of the Non-Profit/Humanitarian of the Year award, Kiwanis Club of
Marysville, winner of the Civic Organization of the Year and Sue Hudspeth of
Hudspeth, Inc. winner of the Civic Leader of the Year award. Examples of
leadership are abundant in our community and the Chamber stands in the
forefront to recognize our Exemplary Leadership winner of the year as Foster
McManus of Achieving Health Chiropractic and Wellness Center.
A special Chairman's Award
was given for the outstanding achievements of the 2006-2007 LEAD Yuba^Sutter
Class for their job of the Extreme Makeover of the Chamber of Commerce offices.
Last but not least the
Athena award was awarded this year to Janet Siller, former director of Friday
Night Live for her tireless efforts in making the Yuba-Sutter area a better
place to live and play. Congratulations to you all!
I would like to also thank
our out-going Chairman of the Board, Bob Harlan of AM 1600 KUBA and STAR 94.1
FM for his tireless efforts in regard to the Yuba-Sutter Chamber of Commerce.
Thank you Bob for all you do for the Chamber and our community.
Last November in Business
Today I included the first part of Yuba-Sutter Chamber of Commerce Trivia. How
well do you know our Chamber businesses? This month I am including part-two of
Chamber Trivia. See how many you can guess without peeking!
The owner of this calming
business was once the lead singer for the Rock & Roll Band "Jezebel Cain".
Can you guess who it is?
This Marysville Restaurateur
was a big hit at last year's Annual Dinner and Awards Program winning
Yuba-Sutter Chamber of Commerce Ambassador of the Year her first year of being
an Ambassador. Who is she and what is her Restaurant?
This "wet" business located
on Garden Highway
started from two Beale Air Force Base retirees opening a Texaco Station in the
1960's to this business now owned by a former McDonalds manager?
You might like to try this
business's selection of buffalo meat hotdogs or fettuccini noodles made out of
yam flour? This business had a small Marysville location and a small Yuba City location until it merged into one larger store
in Yuba City.
Have you been here?
More than 20 years ago after
her daughters went off to college, this business owner decided she was tired of
working her orchards and wanted to work just 3 afternoons a week. She learned
the first week that she would be working a whole lot more than 3 afternoons a
week. Her motto is "This is not a selling business, this is a people business"?
Have you ever done business with her? Many people in this town have!
The owners walked for 2 days
for a total of 30 hours to deliver the first issue of this fine publication to
every doorstep in town. Today to do the same job they have 9 people taking 4
hours in one day. Their favorite event to cover is the Pet Parade. What is this
publication?
This business grew from the
back room of a barber shop on Plumas
Street where Kaffe "T" Latta is located today.
Currently they are located on Shasta
Street where the back room is now a beauty shop.
Do you know this business?
These owners who started
working in their business in high school have a combined work experience of 97
years. They were formerly located in an old Yuba City brewery until they moved next door
into the former Law Office of Robert Coats and across the street from a
legendary hardware store. Do you know who they are?
Speaking of trivia, don't
forget to tune in to Comcast Channel 19 on Wednesday, January 30 at 7:30 pm or
if you miss that one, it will air again on Friday, February 1st at 8:00 pm for
the first episode of the "The Chamber Challenge". Watch our local "celebrities"
test their trivia knowledge for a shot at $500 for their favorite charity!
