This is an overview of some
of the key items we have worked on since the last issue of Business Today. It
is an overview and may not include everything we are doing to meet our mission,
"To create and promote a community climate where businesses are productive and
profitable."
The Government Affairs Committee
The Government Affairs
Committee continued ongoing discussions regarding flood control and flood
storage issues as the community awaits news of the first round of Proposition
1E funding for flood control. The committee will also hear from Sutter County
representatives, updating the group on the county's flood control efforts there
and the recommendation to use an assessment to fund future work.
The GAC also continued to discuss
the proposed new impact fees for construction in Yuba City. The committee understands the
city's need to raise its impact fees to meet future growth needs but wants to
make sure the figure is fair and equitable for builders, developers, home
buyers and the business community.
Tourism
The Tourism Committee
completed work on the latest tourism brochure; a Farm Trails map showing 30
farms stands ranging from strawberry fields to stands with a full inventory of
fruits, vegetables, nuts and other agricultural products. It will be
distributed throughout the region and is available at the Chamber offices at 429 10th St. in
Marysville.
The new Chamber tourism web
site at www.visityubasutter.com. is getting about 1,000 hits a month since it
went up in May. Visitor's Guides were
mailed to Barstow, Atlanta, Santa Ana, Cameron Park, Black Diamond, Wash.;
Ocean Springs, Miss.; Roseburg, Ore.; and Pittsburgh, Penn. Tourism materials were sent to Reno, Nevada,
where a tour bus operator organized a tour for 85 people to the Peach Festival
in Marysville.
Lead Yuba^Sutter
Lead Yuba^Sutter, the
Chamber's professional development group, is accepting applications for the
2007-2008 year. The 10-month leadership program introduces participants to the
Yuba-Sutter area in monthly topic days focused on various areas of interest in
the community. The deadline to apply is Monday, August 20, 2007. The cost is
$700. Applications are available at the Chamber offices at 429 10th St. in Marysville and online at
www.yubasutterchamber.com.
Promote a Strong Local Economy
Our calls for information
including where to get cable and internet service, several calls for the
Farmer's Market, a request for a list of nursing homes and two calls, including
one from Utah,
to rent a hall for an event. The Chamber also unveiled a redesigned Chamber web
site that allows Chamber staff to update content on the site and add additional
member services. This will enhance member services when changes need to be made
to member information. Web site advertising is also available.
Support the Community
We also continued our daily
work of assisting visitors and fielding phone calls on a variety of topics including
getting tickets to the Gold Sox games and looking for vendor space at the Peach
Festival. Our visitors ranged from around the state and the nation. Relocation
and visitors packets went to Vero Beach, Fla.; Texas, Sacramento and Chico.
Networking Opportunities
Our ribbon cuttings, a
Business After Hours, and the Business Connection Breakfast represented about
250 networking contacts for our members.
