Sutter County
View the 2008 Sutter County Crop Report .
The Agricultural Commissioner stated in his summary:
"World demand for wheat, rice and corn increased prices growers received dramatically. Reports indicate growers' returns have not been this favorable since the mid-1970's.
As summarized in this report, agriculture continues to be an integral part of Sutter County's economic base. Industries such as banking, labor, marketing, transportation, and other services directly or indirectly tied to agriculture benefited appreciably as the agricultural industry returned over $1.74 billion to our economy in 2008."
The top five leading crops in Sutter County in 2008 were rice, walnuts, dried plums (prunes), peaches, and tomatoes, in that order.
Yuba County
View the 2008 Yuba County Crop Report . Only a river separates Yuba County (largest town is Marysville) and Sutter County (largest town is Yuba City). Growing conditions each year are similar.
According to the 2008 report, the leading agribultural commodities in 2008 were rice, dried plums (prunes), walnuts, peaches, and milk, in that order.
The Agricultural Commission stated in his summary:
"The gross value of Yuba County's agricultural production for 2008 was $181,322,000, which is an increase of 18.2% from last year's estimate...Rice gross values increased over 72% from higher yields and a large increase in price. Cling peach, dried plum, and some walnut yields were affected by a severe April freeze. In addition, walnut values per unit dropped more than 48%.
"The contribution of agriculture to the economy of Yuba County is not totally reflected in the values of this report. Processing, transporting, marketing, and other farm related services significantly multiply these values to benefit the local economy."
