DID YOU KNOW......... "To date, in 2008, more than 350 community events have been posted on the tourism web site calendar at www.visityubasutter.com."
ANNUAL EVENT: The Chamber's Special Events Committee has decided to move the traditional January Annual Dinner to an Awards Event in May. The decision was made for several reasons, including concerns about the rising costs of producing the high-end dinner event. The Chamber funds its program and activities through member sponsorships and donations and did not want to add a further monetary request at the beginning of the year. The Committee is very excited about its ideas for an upscale, cocktail party themed awards show and will provide more details as they become available.
CANDIDATES FORUMS: Comcast Channel 19, AM1600 KUBA and the Appeal-Democrat have again partnered with the Chamber to provide Candidate's Forums on Wednesday, October 15 starting at 6:00 p.m. with candidates from the City of Yuba City and the City of Live Oak Council featured in a quasi-debate format and interview-style discussions. Thursday, October 16, at 6:00 p.m., features the Sutter County Supervisors and the City of Wheatland Council in a quasi-debate format and interview-style discussions. This is a project of the Government Affairs Committee of the Yuba-Sutter Chamber of Commerce.
"'TIS THE SEASON TO SHOP LOCAL:" Thanks to the Chamber Ambassadors and staff who gave out 1,000 Shop Local discount cards at the Yuba City Centennial Closing Ceremonies. Thanks to Sutter Community Bank for partnering with us at the Yuba City event and to our sponsors Comcast and Sutter Yuba Association of Realtors. To date, 21 businesses have signed up to offer a discount. The full list can be viewed at www.yubasutterchamber.com under Discounts to the Public in the Main Menu. The card is also for sale to the public under "All Products" on the Chamber web site. Our motto is, "The Buck Stays Here." The cost of the program is $75 and includes your listing in Business Today, publicity materials, Shop Local buttons and the discount cards. RED RIBBON THANKS: To Kevin DeHoff at The Country Florist who provided the extra long red ribbon used in the Plumas Street ribbon cutting last Friday. The Country Florist has donated the ribbons for ribbon cuttings for many years.

Friday, October 17, 8 a.m. to Noon, Sexual Harassment Certification Training. Sponsored by the Yuba/Sutter/Colusa Employer Advisory Council and the State of California Employment Development Department, the guest speaker for this workshop is Frank Sanderson, California Regional Manager of TOC Management Services. Mr. Sanderson has 30 plus years of experience in Risk Management, Human Resources and Industrial Relations and has conducted nearly 200 Preventing Sexual Harassment classes. Registration fee is $45 for members, $50 for non-member or $75 the day of event. Fee includes continental breakfast and seminar materials and registration must be received by September 30 to guarantee a spot. Event location is the Hillcrest Plaza Room, 210 Julie Dr in Yuba City. Friday, October 17, 6:00 pm, Marysville Charter Academy for the Arts Spaghetti Dinner & Silent Auction Fundraiser. Spaghetti dinner, salad & garlic bread will be served from 6-7 pm, with entertainment and auction to follow. Tickets are $5 per person, $20 for a family of five, and children 5 and under are free. Tickets are available at the MCAA office or at the door. The funds will be used towards the purchase of a new baby grand piano. The event will be held in the Marysville High School cafeteria.
Saturday, October 18, 10:00 am, Yuba-Sutter Veteran's Town Hall 2008. Sponsored by the Disabled American Veterans, Chapter 9 in Marysville, VA specialized health care is the focus. Participating agencies include the VA Northern California Health Care System and the Regional Office of Claims and Benefits. Federal and state legislative action updates will be announced and the Yuba-Sutter Outstanding Veteran of the Year award will be presented. The American Cancer Society Discovery Shop presents the opportunity to learn to play or join with the BUNCO group you already play with. $10 donation to the American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Campaign. Did you know there are approximately 700 HOMELESS CHILDREN in the Yuba and Sutter communities? Thursday, November 13, 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.: Small Business ExPO & Matchmaking Fair. Sponsored by the California Public Utilities Commission and Comcast, the fair will help small business owners to learn about business opportunities with state government agencies and utilities. Individual appointments can be made with these agencies to go over the paperwork process. To date, 28 vendors representing a variety of agencies will be on hand. Eighteen will be part of the matchmaking segment, which allows business owners to make individual appointments with the agencies. To register for a matchmaking session, e-mail smallbiz@cpuc.ca.gov. Caltrans, the Small Business Development Center, Yuba-Sutter Chamber of Commerce and the Yuba-Sutter Economic Development Corporation are assisting with planning locally. Dr. David Gallo, CSU, Chico Economics Professor and Resident Economist of the Center for Economic Development, will present data and trends and how the differing factors of economics relate and affect growth in our communities.
