"'TIS THE SEASON TO SHOP LOCAL:" The discount cards are made, Shop Local buttons are ready and Friday we kick off the campaign at the Yuba City Centennial Closing Ceremonies. We will be at Sutter Community Bank on Plumas Street and we thank them for partnering with us. We will give out 1,000 free discount cards and another 4,000 discount cards will be distributed through Chamber businesses. We are looking for any ideas you have to promote the Shop Local campaign in Yuba-Sutter. This year, more than ever, it's important that, "The Buck Stays Here." The cost of the program is $75 and includes your listing in Business Today, publicity materials, Shop Local buttons and the discount cards. CHAMBER CHALLENGE AIRS: The Chamber Challenge airs three times this week on Comcast Channel 19. This is the "Centennial Edition" and will feature Yuba City City Council members. The show airs Wednesday, Oct. 8, at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, October 9 at 10:30 a.m. and Friday, Oct. 10, at 7:30 p.m. The contestants are Yuba City Councilman Kash Gill, Yuba City Councilman Tej Maan and Yuba City Assistant City Manager Steve Kroeger. Thanks to our sponsors, Chapman University, Sutter County Tobacco Control Program, Grocery Outlet, Hudspeth Construction and PIP Printing & Document Services.

 

THINK PINK: A handful of businesses have let us know that they will have special promotions in recognition of "Pink October," Breast Cancer Awareness Month. If you are having a promotion, please let us know. We have compiled a list of participating businesses including Affordable Office Furniture, Edible Arrangements, Fremont Rideout Foundation Cancer Center, Pampered Chef and Sierra Health Care Center. Friday, October 10, 5:30 p.m., Business After Hours:  The Chamber will be at Sutter Community Bank, 700 Plumas St in Yuba City.  The Business After Hours will be held in conjunction with the City of Yuba City's Centennial Closing Celebration.  Celebrate the reconstruction of downtown Yuba City and Yuba City's Centennial year closing ceremonies with an old-fashioned Street Faire and Carnival from 5-9 pm.  Participants will feast on fabulous fare from downtown restaurants while they stroll downtown for an evening of great sidewalk shopping at super-sale prices.  Enjoy strolling jugglers, clowns, musicians and others that will provide old-fashioned family-friendly fun.

Friday, October 17, 8 a.m. to Noon, Sexual Harassment Certification Training.  Sponsored by the Yuba/Sutter/Colusa Employer Advisory Council and the State of California Employment Development Department, the guest speaker for this workshop is Frank Sanderson, California Regional Manager of TOC Management Services.  Mr. Sanderson has 30 plus years of experience in Risk Management, Human Resources and Industrial Relations and has conducted nearly 200 Preventing Sexual Harassment classes.  Registration fee is $45 for members, $50 for non-member or $75 the day of event.  Fee includes continental breakfast and seminar materials and registration must be received by September 30 to guarantee a spot.  Event location is the Hillcrest Plaza Room, 210 Julie Dr in Yuba City.  For more information call the Yuba/Sutter/Colusa EAC at 671-3950.  Registration forms are also available at the Yuba-Sutter Chamber of Commerce office at 429 10th St in Marysville.

 

Friday, October 17, 6:00 pm, Marysville Charter Academy for the Arts Spaghetti Dinner & Silent Auction Fundraiser.  Spaghetti dinner, salad & garlic bread will be served from 6-7 pm, with entertainment and auction to follow.  Tickets are $5 per person, $20 for a family of five, and children 5 and under are free.  Tickets are available at the MCAA office or at the door.  The funds will be used towards the purchase of a new baby grand piano. The event will be held in the Marysville High School cafeteria.

Friday, October 31, 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., Scarysville Halloween Festival, Historic D Street, Marysville. This is the 3rd annual festival and includes more than 50 participating businesses with trick or treating, tractor hay rides, costume contests, games, a maze, music and more. Thursday, November 13, 7 a.m. to 1 p.m., Small Business ExPO & Matchmaking Fair. Sponsored by the California Public Utilities Commission and Comcast, the fair will help small business owners to learn about business opportunities with state government agencies and utilities. Individual appointments can be made with these agencies to go over the paperwork process. To date, 28 vendors representing a variety of agencies will be on hand. Eighteen will be part of the matchmaking segment, which allows business owners to make individual appointments with the agencies. To register for a matchmaking session, e-mail smallbiz@cpuc.ca.gov. Caltrans, the Small Business Development Center, Yuba-Sutter Chamber of Commerce and the Yuba-Sutter Economic Development Corporation are assisting with planning locally.  The Fair will be held at the Best Western Bonanza Inn & Convention Center, 1001 Clark Ave in Yuba City.

 

Thursday, November 13, 10:00 a.m. to Noon, "Understanding Your Local Economy" workshop.  Dr. David Gallo, CSU, Chico Economics Professor and Resident Economist of the Center for Economic Development, will present data and trends and how the differing factors of economics relate and affect growth in our communities.  Pre-registration by November 7 is required, with a limited number of seats available.
